The Sparrows of Happiness welcome you...

This is the inaugural post for The Sparrows of Happiness - a solo music project by C. Heider, who is also a member of the Linus Pauling Quartet. Playing in the LP4 has given me a lot of satisfaction over the years, and continues to do so. But there's a lot of material I've accumulated that isn't really ideal for LP4. I don't rule out that some of this stuff could work its way into the LP4 repertoire, assuming the other guys would have it - but it was all stuff that I wanted to record and do myself first, for whatever reason.

This blog is moderated. If you want to rant & rave, get your own blog. I am interested in feedback, both positive and negative, but for obvious reasons hateful or stupid comments simply won't be posted. Instead, they will be sent to /dev/null.

So welcome, and be sure to peruse the website, sparrowsofhappiness.vonheider.com. And stay tuned for more...

Works in progress...

As of now, I have completed about 4 songs, and have a few more that are in the pipeline but haven't been formally arranged or recorded yet. Mastering will be a separate process, which I will probably rely on my LP4 bandmate and friend Stephen Finley to assist me with. All of these songs have been recorded at Ranger Rick Studios, a rebirth of the good old days of my youth when bands like Fear of Roaches or the Blue Guys recorded jams on cassette tapes in my room at home. A Ranger Rick sticker was still proudly displayed on my window, through which the various and sundry neighborhood guitar trolls would climb to set up session without disturbing The Folks. The name stuck, and as it's the spiritual ancestor of my current setup (which is admittedly more high-tech), it seems appropriate today.

The home studio is, at this time, a Digidesign MBox rig with ProTools LE, running on a Mac Mini. I use a Focusrite Voicemaster Pro as my pre-amp and monitor, and I have a few SM57s and a nice Studio Projects condenser mic. I have a Yamaha electric piano and an Oxygen 8 keyboard controller that I use for midi; and the synthesizer of choice is Reason - though it mostly gets used for drums. I have one old Princeton reverb amp, and a variety of guitars including my Rickenbacker 360, a Malden Karma, a cheapy Fender bass and a couple of acoustics. The SG is in the shop, unfortunately, but with any luck will soon experience a Glorious Rebirth.

As I finalize recordings, I will put MP3s up on the website so that people can download them. For the old-fashioned, I will someday have a CD as well. I'll use this blogspot to inform interested folks of new releases and other happenings, and also use this as a forum to post recording notes, comments, etc.

Clinton,

Don't you just love this web shit? I literally could tell you how I stumbled upon The Sparrows of Happiness but that's too much typing and probably incredibly boring . . . so I'll refrain.

Let me just say that The Sparrows of Happiness is a fucking killer name for a band/solo project. It's got the feel of the psych/metal bands that are surfacing more and more these days (i.e. Witch, Dead Meadow and the Black Angels). With a name like that you could play shit like Blackmore's Night (Ritchie Blackmore's RenFest rock) or Inna-Gadda-Davida guitar solo rock. The Sparrows of Happiness could even be dark synth pop. It's your call.

I'm anxious to hear the music because I always get a kick out of hearing what someone I know has made. Please keep me informed and I'll give you some feedback.

I have about 3 songs ready and one in the process... I'll be posting some stuff soon.

Hope you're doing well -

Do you visit NAP at all? (nonalignmentpact.com) - it's a music blog that Ramon, Cramer and some other folk are involved in. I thought maybe I've seen you on there but wasn't sure...
